Mexico earthquake: Tsunami warnings triggered, 5 killed

A magnitude 8.1 natural disaster struck off the southern coast of Mexico early Friday - raising fears of a tsunami and causing at least two dozen deaths, according to reports.

Mexico is on alert for tsunamis along its Pacific coast the region after a magnitude 8.1 quake hit just off the country's southern coast a little before midnight local time, according to the US Geological Survey.

It posed a potential tsunami threat to the Pacific coastlines of countries including Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama and Honduras, the US Tsunami Warning System said.

A massive quake struck the southwestern coast of Mexico Thursday evening, local time, leaving at least 15 people dead in the states of Chiapas and Tabasco.

"It was a major quake in scale and magnitude, the strongest in the past 100 years", said President Enrique Pena Nieto in an address from the National Center for Disaster Prevention headquarters, where he was supervising the emergency response.

Mexico was shaken overnight by the country's strongest quake on record, killing at least 35 people in the southern states and swaying buildings in the capital. The tremor brought memories of a 1985 quake in Mexico City that killed thousands.

The devastation comes as at least 14 people have been killed by Hurricane Irma in the Gulf of Mexico.

Luis Felipe Puente told the Televisa network that 10 had died in Oaxaca state, three in Chiapas and two in Tabasco.

Meanwhile, U.S. forecasters said "hazardous" tsunami waves of more than nine feet above the tide level were possible along the Mexican coast.

Chiapas Governor Manuel Velasco said hospitals, roads and bridges were damaged and four people died in his state. while TV Azteca showed images of small buildings that collapsed in nearby Oaxaca state.

A death has also been reported in Guatemala. He urged people living near the coast to leave their homes as a protective measure.
