Princess Mako is Emperor Akihito's eldest granddaughter.

Under a controversial Japanese law, the female imperial family members forfeit their status upon their marriage to a "commoner", whereas male members do not.

The eldest grandchild of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko has officially announced her engagement to law clerk Kei Komuro, whom she met when they both studied at Tokyo's International Christian University.

The 25-year-old is expected to announce her engagement to former university classmate Kei Komuro, who works at a law firm.

Princess Mako and Komuro said they have dated for around five years since speaking to each other for the first time at a 2012 explanatory meeting for those planning to study overseas.

The couple had a long-distance relationship while studying overseas - Princess Mako in Britain and Mr Komuro in the USA - for one year.

After the flame of romance was lit, Mako left for Britain while Komuro went to the United States to continue their studies.

Japan's Princess Mako is set to lose her royal status after revealing she will marry a commoner.

The Imperial Household Agency first said there were plans underway for the couple's engagement. In return, Komuro replied that the princess has been watching over him "like the moon". Five years later, they've announced they're getting married.

When Princess Mako marries, the Imperial family will be reduced to 18 people.

Princess Mako has since introduced him to her parents, Fumihito (Prince Akishino), the second-in-line to the Chrysanthem Throne, and Kiko (Princess Akishino), as someone she wished to "share her future with".

The announcement was originally expected in July, but was not made due to a rain disaster in the country. Because of her abdication, the princess will become the 8 member o the Imperial family to give up royal status in order to marry since World War II.

When the princess, in a fetching mint green dress, was asked about what her fiance means to her, she described Komuro as a person who warmly encourages her. The other three are her younger sister, Kako, her brother, Hisahito, and Crown Prince Naruhito's daughter, Aiko.
