German authorities prepare to dispose of WW2 bomb

Police have since been guarding the bomb site, which is close to the city centre and just some 2.5 kilometres north of the main Zeil shopping area.

Around 60,000 people were ordered to leave in what was Germany's biggest evacuation since the war, with more than a thousand emergency service workers helping to clear the area.

Helicopters with heat-sensing cameras circled to spot stragglers and police chiefs said they would use force if necessary to clear the area, warning that an uncontrolled explosion would be big enough to flatten a city block.

Authorities began evacuating hospitals and care homes Saturday, as well as the German federal reserve and a major local broadcaster. If that fails, a water jet will be used to cut the fuses away from the bomb.
