Standoff in Brooklyn After Officer Shot Injured
Members of the NYPD and FDNY swarmed Chestnut Avenue, near Ridgewood Avenue, in Cypress Hills just before 4:55 p.m. after reports of shots fired, the spokeswoman said.
NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill says Officer Nguyen was shot once in the right arm and twice in his bulletproof vest by the suspect.
Some shots hit the officer's vest; another hit his arm.
"The officer did not return fire", O'Neill said.
Police say the man opened fire when one of the officers approached him in a rear bedroom of the home.
"What could have been just another day, just another call, turned into something much worse", Mayor Bill de Blasio said during the news conference at the hospital.
The 29-year-old suspect's mother had called 911, reporting that her son was emotionally disturbed. Officers were told the suspect was armed with some type of rifle, what the NYPD refers to as a "long gun".
The officer was treated by the medics with him, police said.
The suspected shooter was holed up in the home for several hours as police converged on the area.
"Thank goodness, the officer is gonna be fine", the police commissioner said.
De Blasio said the wounded cop had a "great attitude" as he lay in his hospital bed and even made light of his situation.
"Small-caliber round, so you're not going to be able to see where the impact was, but I did see the blunt force injury trauma on the officer's chest", O'Neill said.
The officer was brought to Jamaica Hospital with non-hazardous wounds.
