The health crisis of fipronil in eggs has continued

The figure is now thought to be around 700,000.

Fipronil, which is found in eggs, is used to destroy fleas, lice, ticks and cockroaches. Last Friday, it said there was no evidence the United Kingdom was affected at all. "The safety of our products is our priority".

A spokesperson from Asda said: "Customers should be reassured by the FSA's explanation that this decision is not due to food safety concerns and there is unlikely to be any risk to public health from consuming any of these three products".

Some of the products made from these eggs will have had a short shelf life and will have already been consumed, however, we identified some that were still within the expiry date. Waitrose has withdrawn free range egg mayonnaise and reduced fat mayonnaise and free range egg and bacon.

A spokesperson from Sainsbury's said: The safety of our products is our priority.

Luxembourg caterers Caterman and Carnesa also informed the authorities that it had received two batches of eggs coming from a supplier where contamination had occurred.

The Belgian Federal Police on Thursday conducted eight raids in Belgium in connection with the investigation into the contamination of eggs, said the Antwerp public prosecutor's office.

The core issue involves the use of Fipronil which is believed to have been used inappropriately in cleaning products on chicken farms, although it is not authorised around food producing animals. Based on this, the BfR calculates that an adult weighing 65kg (143lb) would be able to eat up to seven eggs within 24 hours and still be within the safe range.

The detentions and a series of co-ordinated raids in the Netherlands and Belgium marked another escalation in a widening scandal that has seen eggs tainted with Fipronil, which is not permitted for use around food producing animals, stripped from shelves in countries including the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and most recently the UK.

The lobby though also claimed that consumers were no longer at risk. This allows us to advise them on appropriate actions to take.

"While in some European countries eggs containing Fipronil residues have been sold as fresh eggs, in the United Kingdom this is not the case".

Markets including Germany, the United Kingdom and Switzerland have been forced to issue recalls of affected eggs supplied by Dutch farms. All of them stock British Lion shell eggs but they use imported eggs in many of their other foods containing eggs.

While only considered mildly toxic in small amounts, one farm in the Netherlands was found to have eggs with acutely harmful levels.

Mina Andreeva, a spokeswoman of European Commission, said member states have a legal obligation to notify the commission's rapid alert system immediately if they have information of threat to human health. She did not provide details on which companies or individuals were targeted. "We know that from receipts at the farms". The criminal investigation began in mid-July 2017, said the prosecutor. Reports suggest that the company obtained the pesticide it used from a supplier in Belgium.
