Car struck group of soldiers in Paris suburb

A dark-colored BMW slammed into soldiers guarding the suburb of Levallois-Perret, northwest of Paris, injuring six of them - two seriously - before getting away. He also said the vehicle appeared to have waited in a nearby alleyway until the soldiers emerged from their barracks to start their patrol.

About four hours after the incident, a police spokeswoman said "verifications are still underway" and that police had not definitively identified the vehicle.

Three of the soldiers involved in the attack were badly injured, according to a government statement.

Earlier the mayor of Levallois-Perret, Patrick Balkany (who is Isabelle Balkany's husband), gave an interview to the BFM TV channel in which he also said the attack was "without a doubt a deliberate act".

Ten-thousand soldiers have been deployed on foot patrol since January 2015 after the attacks on the Paris offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Minister of the Interior Gerard Collomb said the attack was a "deliberate act".

Balkany claimed that the BMW "had prepositioned itself in the cal-de-sack (where the barracks located) and barrelled into them", adding that "the auto had accelerated very quickly". Quoting unnamed police officials, however, the AP said a man was arrested at one stop.

French security forces have shot and arrested a man suspected of being behind an attack on a group of soldiers on Wednesday morning in a Paris suburb, security sources told AFP.

The injured soldiers were part of Opération Sentinelle, a military operation that had been set up to protect the city in the aftermath of terror attacks that have left hundreds dead in recent years.

Another was arrested peacefully after police stopped several cars matching the description of the BMW used in the attack.

Last Saturday, a young man tried to force his way into the Eiffel Tower with a knife, shouting "Allahu Akbar" ("God is greatest").

The increasing number of attacks spurred French counterterrorism prosecutors to ramp up investigations and actively pursue perpetrators who are connected to a terrorist enterprise and attempt to murder French security forces.

In June, an Islamic extremist attacked a police officer with a hammer outside Notre Dame cathedral.
