"My vote went to Balwantsinh Rajput", said another rebel Congress MLA and Vaghela supporter Dharmendrasinh Jadeja. He is seeking re-election for the fifth term in the Rajya Sabha.

Gandhinagar: Voting ends for the high-stakes Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat, where BJP's Amit Shah and Smriti Irani are set to sail through but the fate of Congress party's Ahmed Patel hangs in balance, thanks to infighting and resignations.

Prasad further said that the Congress is losing its cool as it has realised that it is about to taste one of the most embarrassing defeats.

According to the present quality of the Gujarat Assembly every hopeful requires at least 45 votes to win.

Hitting back at the Congress, the Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said, "BJP will win all the three seats and Ahmed Patel will definitely lose". However, Patel sounded confident that he will retain his seat. Ahmed Patel has the support of 44 Congres MLAs and is hoping to get the support of 2 NCP MLAs, though their support is still in a dicey situation. Notwithstanding this defence, these votes were voices of dissent.

Vaghela said the Congress will "suffer" because of moving MLAs to Bengaluru when the state was reeling under flood. Other than Congress Patel is counting on votes from 2 legislators from Sharad Pawar's NCP. Of these, Gohil and Patel apparently voted for BJP.

The Congress has 51 legislators in the Gujarat assembly, including Vaghela, who remains a legislator after quitting Congress. Before voting began, Congress had a clear support of 44 MLAs. Following this, they demanded cancellation of the two votes.

Led by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, the delegation told the commission that under Article 324 of the Constitution no authority can interfere with election process once the voting is completed and the ballots are put inside the box.

The Congress had whisked them away from the state for a "safer custody" after six of its MLAs deserted the party recently and three of them joined the BJP.

Asked about the stone thrown at Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's vehicle, Vaghela said it only showed the extent of the people's "frustration" with their Congress MLAs. Technically, these seven MLAs are still with the Congress, including, Mr Vaghela as he has not resigned as MLA.

Ahmed Patel faces a tough contest in the Rajya Sabha election on Tuesday.

Congress' Gujarat in-charge Ashok Gehlot says senior party leader Ahmed Patel will win comfortably in the Rajya Sabha polls as he has the required numbers.

The election has been necessitated following the completion of the tenures of three existing members - Union minister Smriti Irani, Dilip Pandya of BJP and Ahmed Patel of Congress.
