Ride manufacturer says 'excessive corrosion' led to deadly accident at Ohio State Fair

Ohio State Fair accident cause released

The manufacturer of a ride that malfunctioned at the Ohio State Fair and killed one teenager and injured several others said the mishap was due to corrosion.

The ride, the Fireball, had been on the circuit for 18 years when the accident happened that killed an 18-year-old. His girlfriend, 18-year-old Keziah Lewis, remains in the hospital and is listed to be in serious condition, reported WKBN.

The company said the ride was 18 years old.

The Monmouth County Fair in New Jersey immediately shut down a ride similar to the Ohio State Fair's Fire Ball after the incident, ABC station WABC in NY reported.

The teen had just enlisted in the Marine Corps and was about to head to basic training next year.

Graphic video of the accident showed one of the "passenger-carrying gondolas" breaking apart from the central bar of the ride. Sunday was the fair's last day.

Jarrell's family has hired a civil attorney to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit, according to the Associated Press. A section holding four riders came apart, and screams could be heard as at least two people were ejected and plunged to the ground.

The manufacture said it has collaborated with "industry safety experts to develop an inspection protocol" to prevent future accidents from occurring.

The ride's manufacturer, KMG, announced investigation results Sunday, almost two weeks after the accident.

The "excessive corrosion" was discovered inside the Fire Ball's gondola support beam during a "metallurgical inspection" of the ride, Kroon said.
