Guglielmi said in an email Thursday that the men are at-large but "we have an idea of their whereabouts".

Prof Lathem is a medical researcher and associate professor at Northwestern University's downtown Chicago campus. Andrew Warren, 56, also surrendered to police in neighboring San Francisco.

The two men are expected to first appear before a judge in California before their likely extradition to Chicago, USA Today reports. It was not immediately clear when that would happen.

Wyndham Lathem was being sought in the weird slaying of Trenton James Cornell-Duranleau, 26, whose body was found stabbed several times inside Lathem's Chicago apartment on July 27.

Prior to turning himself in, police said Lathem sent a video message to his family and friends apologizing for "his involvement" in the stabbing and saying he'd made "the biggest mistake of his life". The video raised concern among investigators that Lathem might kill himself.

Both men - taken into custody without incident - will appear before an Oakland court and are now awaiting extradition to IL, where they will be questioned by Chicago homicide detectives.

Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said earlier in the week that Lathem and Cornell-Duranleau had known each other, but he did not know the nature of their relationship.

Wyndham Lathem and Andrew Warren have both been arrested in California.

It's unclear how Warren, whose family in Britain reported him missing three days ahead of the slaying, knew the victim. Lake Geneva police said the man making the donation did not give his name.

They apparently stopped in Wisconsin to make a $1,000 donation to the public library in the town of Lake Geneva in the victim's name.

On the night of the slaying, police said the front desk of the high-rise building where Lathem lived in Chicago's trendy River North neighborhood received an anonymous call from a person who said that a crime had been committed in Lathem's 10th floor apartment.

Officers arrived to find Cornell-Duranleau dead.
