Google Play to Rank Apps Based on Their Performance, Stability

Google Play Store will now rank apps according to performances

Bad Android Apps Officially Getting Downgraded in Google Play Store

The new measures combined should mean that Android users will start to find higher quality apps that are free from malware in the Google Play Store.

Google is now incorporating the new features of the ranking algorithms, which will allow for the bad Android apps to fall in the rankings on Google Play Store. The updated algorithm will see higher quality apps appearing in the Play Store more than similar apps of lower quality - those that crash often.

Engineers created the new system after they conducted an internal study of all one-star ratings and discovered that half of these negative reviews mentioned app stability as the main factor for the low score.

This change is just a further indication of an overall shift in search ranking priority criteria that began years ago with Google's Panda algorithm: Quality content is what really matters.

According to the latest announcement by Google, the company is targeting applications that cause slow render times, excessive battery usage, and crashes, explaining that users should avoid them as these can become "a source of frustration" for them.

The second positive thing is that Google makes the developers optimize their apps in order to remain relevant in the Google Play Store and increase the chances of downloading apps by users.

In a blog post outlining the changes, Google also suggests that developers should focus on the quality and performance of their apps, if they find themselves sliding down the list. It offers the example of Basuu which managed to increase its rating from 4.1 to 4.5 star exclusively by focusing on app performance.

Home to more than 2 million apps, there is a perception among some quarters that the Google Play Store is home to low quality apps, or at least much lower quality than those found in Apple's App Store. Find out how crowdtesting can ensure your digital product works in the real world.
