Over 200 languages now spoken in Canada: census
Rising Canadian housing costs have boosted the number of people living with their parents, mostly notably in and around Toronto, according to census data released by Statistics Canada on Wednesday.
In fact, in 15 years, the proportion of couples with at least one child has decreased by 5.6% to reach just above the 50 %.
Just over 28 per cent of all households comprised a single person in 2016 - the highest share of one-person households since 1867, making it the most common living arrangement in Canada for the first time ever.
"The big shift has been a shift away from families with children to empty nest couples or younger people deciding not to have children", said Doug Norris, chief demographer at Environics Analytics.
There were 72,880 same-sex couples in Canada in 2016, a 60.7 per cent increase over 2006. The number of overall English speakers was up from 2011, while the number of French speakers declined across Canada and in Quebec.
The rate of English-French bilingualism was 18 per cent a year ago, the highest ever.
But last year's census numbers show the number of young adults living with mom and/or dad is on the rise. What we see in our area is on par with the province.
There may be a cultural expectation that adult children welcome their parents into their home, or a need for grandparents to provide child-care, or a push to split living expenses in the face of a housing crunch, Spinks said. Those living with children fell to 25.5 per cent from 32.9 per cent in 2001.

After living together in Shenzhen, it seemed only natural that once the entire family was in Canada, her parents would live with her, her husband and their young son, she said. "Living with one's parents may have temporary benefits in terms of logistical, emotional or financial support while pursuing studies or finding full-time work", Statistics Canada said in a supplementary report, Young adults living with their parents 2016. In general, cities with a higher-than-average proportion of young adults living with parents are found in the Greater Toronto Area and B.C.'s Lower Mainland.
But more people living alone isn't necessarily all good.
We are not only more diverse culturally and linguistically, according to Statistics Canada we are also more diverse in our living arrangements.
There are more single dads than ever before, more Millennials living with their parents, and more same-sex couples - married and common law, with children and without.
Some 228,770 people reported speaking an Indigenous language at home, while only 213,230 reporting having an Indigenous mother tongue - evidence that more people are adopting them as a second language.
As far as languages go, 18 per cent of Canadians speak both English and French and 19.4 per cent of Canadians speak more than one language at home.
Barrie is right on track with the national trend, at 4.1 per cent, which is up from 3.6 per cent over the past 15 years. For example, income redistribution, pensions and the increased presence of women in the workforce have led to more people being economically independent today than in the past, especially in older age groups.
The rise in one-person households can be explained in part by higher separation and divorce rates, an ageing population, higher life expectancy and later in life marriage, among other factors. Multi-generational families are becoming more common in Metro Vancouver, while single-person and child-free households are growing fastest on the Island and in the Okanagan, possibly due to an aging population.
