McConnell To Delay US Health Care Vote In McCain's Absence

Pressure up on Arizona senators as new health bill unveiled

Medicaid affects millions of Americans, young and old

Although Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's plan was to quickly vote on the legislation this week, McCain's surgery left Republicans scrambling as what already promised to be a tight vote would prove to be impossible without the senator from Arizona.

"While John is recovering, the Senate will continue our work on legislative items and nominations, and will defer consideration of the Better Care Act".

In Phoenix, Mayo clinic hospital doctors said McCain underwent a "minimally invasive" procedure to remove the 5cm (2in) clot and that the surgery went "very well", a hospital statement said.

Sens. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) have already said they would oppose a procedural vote to advance to the new Senate GOP healthcare legislation, which was unveiled this past week. John McCain, R-Ariz. listens on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, July 11, 2017, during the committee's confirmation hearing for Nay Secretary nominee Richard Spencer.

"There are about eight to 10 Republican senators who have serious concerns about this bill", Ms Collins told CNN's State of the Union programme, faulting the bill for its major cuts to Medicaid.

Sen. John McCain said Russia's election-related hacks threaten to "destroy Democracy" and said America's response was 'totally paralyzed'. With the GOP holding a 52-48 majority, they can afford to lose only two Republicans.

A statement from McCain's office said he would recover in Arizona this week, but neurosurgeons interviewed by the Times said that time frame could be longer.

The Elders said that Carter will remain affiliated with the group as an honorary, or emeritus, Elder starting June 1. Two years ago, former President Jimmy Carter announced to the world that he was battling cancer.

That said, McCain is not anymore gung-ho about the bill than many of his fellow Republicans.

Mitch McConnell delayed the BCRA's vote for next week after Sen.

"Looking forward to a speedy recovery, John", said Sen. "It has produced premium increases that are very troubling and hard for people to afford, particularly those who don't get the subsidies under the current law", she said.

McCain dismissed concerns, saying he had stayed up late the night before watching an Arizona Diamondbacks game. Ron Johnson. Johnson originally came out against the BCRA for not being conservative enough, but said after the release of the updated bill that he was on board.

"Mr. McCain's absence will give the forces of opposition - which include scores of health care provider organizations and patient advocacy groups - more time to mobilize", The New York Times noted.

Republicans had hoped to get a vote to the floor this week, but McCain's surgery pushed it back.
