Since House Republicans passed a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare last month after much hand-wringing and drama, a "working group" of Senate Republicans have been meeting to share their preferences for a health care bill. It's unclear as to what, exactly, he meant by the use of that specific adjective, although it does seem to directly contradict his other statements on the issue.

Trump said at the time that he brought the lawmakers over - on buses from Capitol Hill, no less - after the bill narrowly passed through the House because "we want to brag about the plan." .

Before the meeting with Senate Republicans began in earnest, the president told his guests that the Senate version will be "generous, kind, with heart". "He talked about making sure that we have a bill that protects people with preexisting conditions".

Senators from states that expanded Medicaid are seeking a "glide path" that would phase out the additional federal funding for the program over a period of seven years starting in 2020, instead of the abrupt cutbacks in the federal funding starting in 2020 that are called for under the House bill.

"There are third rails that they can touch in the bill", David McIntosh, president of the Club for Growth, said.

Did Trump encourage the passing of a bill he truly didn't support in the hopes of gaining a purely symbolic victory over the Democrats?

During his election campaign, Mr Trump consistently criticised President Obama's healthcare policy, vowing to "repeal and replace" the legislation.

That bill, which the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office concluded will leave 23 million more people without health insurance than if Obamacare remained in place, has been rejected by the public.

"But, what I will say is he does believe, and I think, we can improve upon the House product ... and get a bill that is more workable for the American people", Thune added. "We'll come out with a real bill, not Obamacare, and the results are going to be fantastic. and everybody's going to be happy".

"The message was that we need to get this done, it needs to be done right, but sooner is better than later", said Sen.

According to the latest polling, from Quinnipiac University, 44 percent of people expect health insurance costs will go up under the House Republican bill and 57 percent think fewer people with have insurance coverage. The apparent goal is to get the legislation scored - a Senate requirement - and hold a vote before the bill or its effects are widely digested by the public.

Senate Republicans are dangling billions of dollars in opioid-fighting funds to try to entice wary moderates to sign onto their Obamacare repeal bill, looking to ink a final compromise.

Trump made the comments during a White House lunch with 15 GOP senators. Patty Murray's request that he hold a hearing on health care legislation being written in secret by a panel of 11 male Republican senators. But reporters aren't asking about the health care bill because they are busybodies or disrespectful.

Alexander moved to cut her off, saying: "You passed the ACA in the middle of a snowstorm with 60 votes and crammed it down the throats of Republicans".

Conservatives like Sens. Ted Cruz and Rand Paul have also come out against a slower phase-out of this funding, making a compromise more hard.
